Balewgizie Tegegne (MPH, PhD)

Dr. Tegegne is an accomplished epidemiologist and public health professional with over 10 years of expertise in health research design, data analytics, and project leadership. Currently a Research Fellow at the National Institute on Aging, NIH, Dr. Tegegne conducts research exploring the relationship between the gut microbiome, aging, and brain health. His work emphasizes meticulous data analysis, protocol development, and dissemination of findings in peer-reviewed journals and conferences.

Dr. Tegegne excels in consultancy services, providing expert guidance in public health research, data analytics, and capacity building. He has a proven track record of organizing and leading large-scale research projects and international consortiums, fostering collaboration across interdisciplinary teams to deliver impactful outcomes. With over 25 peer-reviewed publications, Dr. Tegegne has demonstrated a strong ability to translate research into actionable strategies. Dr. Tegegne’s extensive academic journey includes earning a Ph.D. and M.S. in Epidemiology from the University of Groningen in the Netherlands, where he investigated big data in health and genetics to drive evidence-based clinical improvements.

Additionally, he received an MPH in Epidemiology at Addis Ababa University and a BSc in Public Health at Haramaya University in Ethiopia. In previous roles, including as a Research Scientist at Columbia University and as Head of the Department of Public Health at Haramaya University, Dr. Tegegne spearheaded studies utilizing diverse datasets such as biobanks and electronic health records. His technical skills encompass advanced statistical programming in R, Python, and cloud computing, alongside expertise in real-world data analysis and research methodologies to make significant contributions to the field of public health.
