Girmay Desalegn Tarekegn (MSc, PhD)
Dr. Girmay Desalegn Tarekegn is an experienced biomedical researcher and educator with over a decade of expertise in immunology and vaccine development for infectious diseases. He combines advanced scientific knowledge with a proven track record of delivering innovative solutions to complex global health challenges. Dr. Tarekegn earned his PhD in Immunology from Hannover Medical School, Germany, and has held key academic and research leadership roles at prestigious institutions, including Jimma University and Mekelle University in Ethiopia, and the Center for Vaccine Development and Global Health (CVD) at the University of Maryland, USA. At CVD, he led NIH-funded projects to develop vaccines targeting Shigella, making significant contributions to global public health efforts.
His research focuses on understanding host immunity to infectious diseases, with a particular emphasis on the development and evaluation of novel vaccines. Dr. Tarekegn is highly skilled in all aspects of research, including study conceptualization and design, execution, project management, statistical analysis, data interpretation, and scientific writing.
Dr. Tarekegn also holds a BSc in Medical Laboratory Science and an MSc in Hematology and Immunohematology from Addis Ababa University, Ethiopia. He has further refined his expertise through advanced training in vaccinology and immunology at renowned institutions, including the Institut Pasteur in France and Hannover Biomedical Research School in Germany. Dr. Tarekegn’s accomplishments are evident in his extensive scientific portfolio, which includes numerous peer-reviewed publications, conference presentations, and invitations to serve as a reviewer and editor for leading scientific journals. He has also been honored with prestigious awards, including the Armauer Hansen Research Institute (AHRI) Tore Godal Prize for outstanding biomedical research in Ethiopia.
