Dr. Tesfa D. Habtewold

Dr. Tesfa D. Habtewold is an Epidemiologist with over four years of experience in health research design, big data analytics, and project leadership. He also has six years of experience in research and teaching in nursing at various universities and colleges. Currently, Dr. Habtewold is a Visiting Research Scholar at the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development in the United States (US) National Institutes of Health (NIH). Dr. Habtewold conducts research on the interplay of genomics, epigenomics, transcriptomics, metabolic and inflammatory biomarkers, and exposomes in the life course development of cardiometabolic and psychiatric disorders.
In his previous role as a postdoctoral researcher at Maastricht University, Netherlands, Dr. Habtewold’s work focused on developing a data-driven decision-making model to select personalized treatment for patients with depression in the Netherlands. His primary tasks include designing epidemiological studies, data analysis, presenting findings at (inter)national conferences, and publishing in peer-reviewed journals. Dr. Habtewold performed multidimensional data analyses using R, Python, SAS, and STATA in both Windows and Unix operating systems.
Dr. Habtewold has extensive experience in project design and management, big data analysis, and publishing science. Much of Dr. Habtewold’s work is aimed at investigating the epidemiology and risk factors of psychiatric and cardiometabolic disorders. He has also published on several other research topics, including infant and child nutrition, maternal and neonatal morbidity and mortality, TB and HIV, healthcare service utilization and satisfaction, and trauma. Further, Dr. Habtewold’s work targets improving the methodological and reporting quality of systematic reviews and meta-analyses. With over 70 peer-reviewed publications, Dr. Habtewold has demonstrated a strong ability to deliver impactful outcomes to the field of Epidemiology and Public Health.
Dr. Habtewold earned a Ph.D. in Epidemiology (Concentration: Clinical and Genetic Epidemiology) from the University of Groningen, Netherlands, in 2021. Dr. Habtewold conducted deep clinical phenotyping of schizophrenia spectrum disorders using data-driven methods and investigated cardiometabolic comorbidities by leveraging 10-year longitudinal family-based cohort data. Dr. Habtewold also holds a master’s degree in Clinical and Psychosocial Epidemiology from the University of Groningen, Netherlands, a master’s degree in Adult Health Nursing from Addis Ababa University, Ethiopia, and a bachelor’s degree in Nursing from Hawassa University, Ethiopia.
